Obituary for Lloyd J. Irwin

Passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg MB, on Thursday December 29, 2011 at the age of 91 years, Lloyd Joseph Irwin, formerly of Belmont MB.

Lloyd was born December 26, 1920 at the home of his parents Thomas and Margaret Irwin at Belmont and died December 29, 2011 at the Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg aged 91 years 3 days. He left school early, joined the work force, working for farmers in the area. In 1941 he joined the XIIth Manitoba Dragoons, training Winnipeg, then served in England, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany returning in late 1945 being discharged 1946. Some say he had the luckiest service number H-77777. While serving in The Netherlands he met his future wife Augusta Massolt / Massaut in Leeuwarden. She came to Canada as a War Bride in 1947 and they married July 4, 1947 at Belmont. They had a baby girl in 1948 who died in child birth, and a son Chris in 1952. Their marriage dissolved in the summer of 1960.

After the War, he returned to Belmont and took up farming on 25-5-16. In 1966 he sold the farm to Morley Myers and moved to Brandon working on construction. When the industry slowed down there, he moved to Winnipeg and continued in the industry up to his retirement age. Some notable projects he worked on start to finish: the McMaster Hall complex, the Brodie Science Building, City of Brandon Waste Water Treatment Facility and in Winnipeg the Seven Oaks Hospital and the Centra Gas Building. Lloyd was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the ANAF before entering Deer Lodge.

He was a man for hard work and a kind heart. Always had time for his son, those who came with him, his grandson and looked forward for the little girl to visit, his grand daughter while in Deer Lodge. He always sat in his chair by the window peering down to see who was coming for a visit.

Lloyd is survived by his son Chris [Katherine] of Belmont, his only grandson Robbie & his wife Pam and his great granddaughters Sarah & Emma all of Edmonton Alta. Also, by his sister Iva Shaw who now resides in Killarney.
