Phyllis Turnbull (Keddie)
Phyllis was born in Belmont, Man., the eldest child of Philip Rees and Alice Myrtle (Jennings) Keddie. She grew up on a farm east of Holland. After attending Normal School in Winnipeg, she taught school in Cypress River and at the Louise School northwest of Treherne. She married Ross Wellington Turnbull in 1953 and moved to the Matchettville district north of Treherne, where they lived their entire married life.
Phyllis was an active member of the Matchettville UCW and the Treherne Hospital Auxiliary, as well as a Explorers and 4-H leader. She sang in the church choir for many years, and was the first woman to be elected chair of the board of the Treherne United Church.
She was a gifted craftsperson, and friends and family members treasure her handmade afghans, paper tole and petit point pictures. She and Ross hosted many Christmas celebrations in the big house at the farm, where the coffee pot was always on and the door open to friends, family and strangers. She baked endless amounts of cookies and cakes, and froze and canned produce from her large garden.
Phyllis returned to teaching for a short time in the late 1960s, teaching at Oakridge Colony School near Holland. She and Ross enjoyed trips to PEI and California to visit his sisters before his sudden passing in 1989.
Phyllis built a new home in Treherne, where she lived until moving to the Treherne Care Home in October 2012. She enjoyed traveling to various locations, including a trip to Churchill, before she lost her sight in the early 2000s. She was committed to her children and grandchildren, who brought her great joy.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Myrtle and Philip Keddie, her husband Ross Turnbull, brothers Bert and Gordon and infant sister Sylvia. She is survived by her children Howard (Linda), David, and Nancy (Ed Painter) and grandchildren Amy, Andrea and James Painter, and Andrew, Philip and Lindsay Turnbull, as well as sisters-in-law Lois Keddie and Lucille Hogg, and brothers-in-law Ken (Opal), Ron (Audrey) and Glen Turnbull, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held in the Treherne United Church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday October 14, 2014 with Rev. Chuck Ross officiating. Interment to follow in the Woodlands Cemetery.
