Hugh attained his Teaching Certificate in Winnipeg in 1965 and started his first teaching position in Isabella, Manitoba where he met his future wife, Margaret. In 1967 Hugh moved to Holland, MB to teach. During the summer, when he was not camping with the family, Hugh seized any chance to get back to farming by driving swathers, grain trucks and potato trucks for local farmers. Following retirement, he spent time traveling throughout Canada with his wife Margaret.

Hugh was a committed community member being a founding member of the Holland Area Lions in 1979 and serving for 40 years as both a member and executive. Hugh coached volleyball, basketball, track and field, and hockey, and enjoyed curling, and golfing. After retirement Hugh became an active member at the Holland Friendship Centre, delivering meals, enjoying floor curling, shuffleboard, and many other activities.

Hugh leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Margaret (nee Young), sons Shawn & daughter-in-law Shirley Fraser of Winnipeg, MB and Sheldon Fraser of Scottsdale, AZ, grandsons James & Conner, sister-in-law Susan Fraser of Arborg, MB along with niece Heather & nephew Chris as well as extended relatives and friends.
