Archie was born November 10, 1925 in Bruxelles, Manitoba, the youngest of three children. He grew up helping his parents on the farm. He attended the Ste. Marie School in Bruxelles but, as was common in those days, it was for a short time.
On October 21, 1948, Archie married Louise Hacault, with whom he spent the next 70 years. Together, on the DeSpiegelaere homestead, they raised their four sons. Archie was always a hard worker and he instilled this value in his children. He was always ready and willing to help out neighbours, whether it was for harvesting, haying or any other chores.
Archie liked to have fun! He enjoyed a good laugh, joking and teasing. We often heard stories of the card parties they had at their house or at the neighbours, where they would play BEIN till the wee hours! Archie and Louise attended many social evenings in Bruxelles or surrounding towns, where Archie loved to dance and have a good time especially with his son’s friends. Belgian Bowling Tournaments on Sunday afternoons were also opportunities to socialize with neighbours, friends and family. The New Year’s Day “tour” of family and friends’ homes in Bruxelles was a favorite event!
Archie got the nickname “Bunker” when the show All in the Family was popular. He good–naturedly took on the name, called his truck Edith and as it happened, got a daughter-in-law Gloria! He enjoyed all the ribbing and joking that came along with the name.
Archie and Louise retired and moved to Holland in 1981. The farm was dear to their hearts so they were very happy that their son, Gabriel, took over the farm and it stayed in the DeSpiegelaere name. During retirement, Archie enjoyed going back to the farm, helping out if he could. He loved to go for rides in the countryside, visiting neighbours and going for coffee at the local coffee shop. In his later years, Archie could be seen riding around on his scooter, sometimes taking a tumble as he’s trying to light a cigarette and drive at the same time!
Archie loved to tease his grandchildren, take them for rides on the tractor and watch them play hockey and baseball.
Thanks Dad for all the memories and everything you did for us. We will miss you and love you forever. The family would like to thank the staff at the Tiger Hills Personal Care Home for their excellent care.
