Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan Lawerance Dowd on Monday February 17, 2020 at the Glenboro Health Centre at the age of 96 years.

Ivan leaves to mourn his passing his “dream-girl”, Pearl (nee Warrener), who he was blessed to spend 74 years of marriage with. He will be lovingly remembered by his sons Murray (Ilene) of Ethelbert MB, Clinton (Audrey) of Sundown MB, Allan of Glenboro, Garry (Heather) of Dawson Creek B.C., Glenn (Sue) of Glenboro, Bill (Linda) Warrener of Baldur; eighteen grandchildren, Michael (Shar), Carli (Derek), Morgan, Kevin (Angie), Angela (Sam), Ayn (Tim), Russell, Erin, Allison (Kent), Pamela, Jason (Beth), Cameron (Bonnie), Becky, Zachary (Jen), Meg, Tell (Katelyn), Scott (Fiona), Amber (Randy); twenty-seven great grandchildren & four great-great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister Elva Clark of Burnaby B.C. as well as numerous extended family & friends. Ivan was predeceased by his parents, John and Ida; grandson Stephen Dowd; daughter-in-law Jan Dowd & brother-in-law Gordon Clark.

Ivan was born on his parent’s home-farm south-east of Glenboro on May 6, 1923. Some of his fondest childhood memories were family fishing trips, fairs, and sports days in town. Ivan shared many memories with his younger sister, Elva, and was the first to admit that she had to put up with quite a bit having him as an older brother

At 19 years-of-age, Ivan joined the Royal Canadian Airforce as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. He spent time in Winnipeg, Dauphin, St. Thomas, ON, Patricia Bay, BC, and finally, Comox, BC which is where he was stationed when the war ended. It was while in Comox that Ivan was granted a month’s leave with which he came back to the home farm in Glenboro to help with harvest. During this time, he met Pearl; they fell head-over-heals in love and used the trip back to Comox as their honeymoon. Shortly after, his discharge came through and they headed back to Glenboro to farm and start a family.

Ivan had the great pleasure of farming with all five of his sons, a time he considered to be some of the best years of his life. He always said that farming wasn’t a great way to make money, but it sure was a great way to raise a family. Ivan and Pearl enjoyed taking many family holidays and camping trips and also spent a few winters in Arizona.

Ivan’s interest in flying led to him getting his private pilot’s license and also helping to form the Glenboro Flying Club. Even after he stopped flying, his interest in aviation remained and he was more than thrilled to be among the first people to ride in the aircraft that was rebuilt by his youngest son, Glenn.

To all those that knew him, Ivan was regarded as a kind man, one who was always seen with a smile on his face. To his family, he was all of this and more. His grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren were incredibly blessed to have him in their lives, as the love he felt for them all was beyond measure.

The love shared between Ivan and Pearl was an inspiration to everyone who was lucky enough to see them together. They spent 74 blissful years together, never apart for more than a few days, and it was clear that their love for each other never stopped growing.

Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Friends that so desire, memorial donations can be made in Ivan's memory to the Glenboro Area Foundation Inc. (Youth in Sports & Recreation Fund Designation), Box 147, Glenboro MB R0K 0X0.
