Obituary

Archie passed away on Wed Feb 5, 2014 at Portage la Prairie MB with his family by his side. He is survived by wife, Marlene (nee Turnbull), and Children: Bonnie (Ron) Lounsbury and Ron (Kathy). Grandchildren: Blayne (Lorena), Tyler (Jess), Alyssa (Norm) and Braden. And Great-granddaughter, Sawyer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends. Archie was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Florence (nee Wilson) Morrison, Brothers Jimmy (Eva), Harvey (in infancy) and Johnny (Wilma) Morrison, Sisters Mary (Charlie) Giles, Naomi (Max) Hewitt, Jeanie (in childhood) and Phyllis (Ozzie) Hewitt, and Brother-in-law, Brodie Munro, as well as numerous extended relatives. He was born on October 25, 1930 at Rathwell and attended school at Cherry Valley. At a young age Archie, drove a team of horses with an enclosed cutter that would have a heater in the back. Archie was 24 when his father passed and he took over the responsibilities of the farm with help from various other family members. In 1951 the courtship began between Archie and Marlene, until they were married in 1956 right after Marlene graduated from nursing. Not sure if farming was what he wanted to do in 1955 Archie moved to Winnipeg where he was employed with the Canadian Pacific Railway until 1960, where he made many lifelong friends. During that time in the Winnipeg, Archie and Marlene had their first born Bonnie Jean in 1959, to be followed with a son Ronald Roy Alexander in 1960. Shortly after the birth of Ronnie, Archie and Marlene moved back to Rathwell to live with Archie's mom at what was referred to as "Grandma's old house" until they moved into their new home where their son lives now on Archie and Marlene's birthday. Yes, they shared the same birth date but not the same year. From that day forward Archie called himself a farmer and was proud of it. He especially loved harvest time. Cattle were also a passion of Archie, and he would give names to each of his cows Archie gave a lot back to the community, he was master of ceremony at many Rathwell Fiddling contest and any other event in the community that required the skills of an MC., including calling BINGO. He performed in 10 C-FRY Rotary Talent nights to help raise funds for numerous organizations within the Rathwell area. He enjoyed curling, especially the socialization aspect of the event. Camping and doing some traveling were also things Archie got much pleasure out of and it never seemed to matter the situation, he would always come home with making a few new friends and a few more stories. Family was "what kept that old heart beating" and he loved every moment he was able to spend with them all. He especially liked it when they were all there at the same time, all sitting around the table together. Archie drove a school bus for 17 years and was a municipal councillor for 9 years, both of which he enjoyed immensely. He was probably best known for his entertainer qualities, playing for many old time dances, especially in the Rathwell, St. Claude, Treherne, Notre dame de Lourdes, Portage and Gainsbourgh area. He loved gatherings no matter what the occasion, the more people around the better he liked it. In 2011 Archie and Marlene moved to Queen's Courts, Portage La Prairie, which Archie only had the good fortune of living for about 4 months. Despite the many efforts by Marlene to provide the care he required at home, he eventually had to go to Douglas Campbell Lodge where he soon won the hearts of many staff with his joking around attitude. Archie enjoyed is time at Douglas Campbell and even provided the afternoon entertainment one day, when the scheduled entertainment didn't show up. They put on his CD, put a mike in his hand and he was "back in the saddle". Rarely did you mention Archie's name and someone didn't know him. His life was bountiful with friends for which he was so grateful. Although he will be sadly missed, he has been welcomed back into the loving arms of his parents, brothers and sisters and many friends who have gone before him. "The old man from the mountain" has made his last journey home. Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Archie Morrison may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or to a charity of one's choice.
