Obituary

Calvin Darling passed away peacefully on Saturday October 4th, 2014 at the Baldur Health Centre with family at his side. Calvin was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 31st, 1926, the eldest son of Garnet and May Darling. Garnet and May moved back to the family farm south of Baldur in 1927, where Calvin grew up, along with his two brothers, Jack and Bill. Calvin attended Connaught School until he moved to Neelin School for his high school years, where he graduated from grade 12. As a teenager Calvin enjoyed many hours hunting and fishing with his father and brothers, as well as athletics - baseball, hockey, and curling. At the age of 18, he joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry unit of the Canadian Army and prepared to do his part in ending World War II. Upon his return to Baldur in 1945, he joined his father working on the family farm. Calvin married Gladys Mabon in 1950, and continued to work the farm, while they raised four children. Farming and family were Calvin's interests and the driving force all his life. He maintained a lifelong commitment to the Canadian Legion. He also drove a school bus, was a volunteer ambulance driver, and remained a reliable and dedicated volunteer for all community activities. Calvin was a lifelong member of the United Church in both Neelin and Baldur, always ready to lend a hand in reaching out to others. Calvin and Gladys moved to Baldur in 1989, where they continued to reside until the present. Through his later years, Calvin enjoyed having almost daily contact with operations on his farm, where he maintained a close relationship with his renters. Calvin loved to socialize at the local coffee shop in Baldur, meeting daily with friends and discussing the affairs of the municipality and the world. Calvin loved his family and took great pride in the undertakings and achievements of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed travelling to various destinations, and especially trips to visit family. Calvin was predeceased by his parents Garnet & May, brothers Jack & Bill, & by brothers & sisters-in-law Lorne & Ivan Mabon, Eleanor Dubyts, Lynne Mabon & Elizabeth Mabon. He leaves behind his wife Gladys, his children, Sandra (Bernie Davidowich) and their children Trevor, Ryan (Yolanda), and Eric; Dennis (Rhonda) Darling, and their children Tim (Denise), Amy (Chris Quilley), and Kevin; Elizabeth Manning and her children Megan (Melissa), and Arel (Andrew); Brian (Kathy) and their children Ashley (Jake Sangster), and Kristy; and brother-in-law Morley Mabon.
