"A very nice man"

With heavy hearts and a lifetime of wonderful memories, we announce the passing of Carl David Gibb at the age of eighty on July 17, 2026, in Wawanesa, Manitoba.

Carl was born on January 28, 1946, in Wingham, Ontario, to his proud parents, the late David and Evelyn Gibb. He loved to laugh and always had a story ready for any moment. His quick wit and encouragement will live on each time we gather and remember him.

Carl was deeply loved by his wife and best friend, Luanne Gibb (Criddle). Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family. He leaves behind his children Jessi Gibb, Amber Litton (Miles Steele), Chelsea Long (Ryan Laing), Robyn Gibb, and Morgan Gibb (Trent Roblin). He said goodbye to his grandchildren Jordynn, Carter, Dawson, Dallas, Ava, Hunter, and Cali Jo, all of whom he was very proud of. Carl is survived by his brothers John (Judy) Gibb and Murray (Colleen) Gibb, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends who were family to him.

Carl’s life was shaped by hard work and an adventurous spirit that often drew him west. At sixteen, he boarded a train to Chilliwack, British Columbia, to join the Royal Canadian Engineers Apprentice program. He remembered this time with great fondness, even reconnecting with his troop sergeant in recent years. After training, he returned to Kitchener, Ontario, where he worked in various factories, drove a ready-mix truck, and welcomed his first child, Jessi.

In 1968, Carl headed west again, working on a farm in Porcupine Plains, Saskatchewan, then made his way to Thompson, Manitoba where he worked for Inco. He soon found his stride as a diamond driller with Midwest Drilling, later working in the Britannia Mine and the pulp and paper mill in Squamish, British Columbia. He returned to surface drilling with Canadian Longyear where he travelled and worked in locations across nearly every province.

In 1974, Carl returned to Manitoba to start a farrow to finish hog farm north of Wawanesa. He occasionally returned to drilling to support what he fondly called his “farming addiction”. During these years, he welcomed his daughters Amber and Chelsea.

Life changed in 1985 when Carl moved to Winnipeg and began a new chapter with Luanne, starting a successful contracting business. They welcomed their daughter Robyn in 1987. When the economy shifted in 1988, the family moved to Scarborough and later settled in Oshawa, Ontario, where they welcomed their daughter, Morgan. This time back allowed Carl to complete many projects and enjoy treasured visits with his parents in Whitechurch, Ontario. Carl visited with extended family and old friends during his time in Ontario.

In 1993, Carl and his family moved to the Wawanesa area to settle on the family farm. He continued contracting and farming, sharing with Luanne a deep love for horses and rural life. In later years, they raised two Percherons, Jack and Molly. Carl was truly at home holding the lines, giving sleigh and wagon rides filled with stories, laughter, songs, and the delighted squeals of children.

The Gibb home was regularly frequented by family and friends. Carl sat at the head of the table, and the seats closest to him were always claimed first. Laughter carried throughout the home at every meal and gathering.

In 2011, Carl was diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition. Despite countless tests and treatments, the disease advanced and eventually consumed him. His journey was made lighter by the unwavering love of his family and friends, and by the exceptional care of Dr Della Lee, Dr Ilse, Dr Giannouli, Kara Flammond, and the compassionate staff of the Wawanesa Personal Care Home.

Alcoholism was a battle for Carl throughout his life, and he was an ever-grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Carl’s last drink was December 8,1990 giving him 35+ years of contented sobriety. Carl made many lifelong friends in the program.

Carl requested a Celebration of Life which will be held Saturday August 15, 2026, at 3:00 pm in the Wawanesa Centennial Hall to share stories, laughter, and memories.
