Obituary

Clarence Stanton of Treherne, MB passed away at the Tiger Hills Health Centre on Thursday April 3, 2014 at the age of 88 years. Clarence was born on December 16, 1925, the youngest son of James & Barbara Stanton. Clare is one of six children born to James & Barbara. Clare is lovingly remembered by his partner, Kay, his sister Lorna, his brother-in-law Ed Schultz, and his nieces & nephews. Clare was predeceased by his brothers Frank (Aileen), Bert (Isabel) and sisters Evelyn and Ruth. Clare went to school out at Wilson Glen School, west of the family farm. Clare lived his entire life on the family farm north of Treherne with the exception of a winter working in the mines at Red Lake, ON and other periods of time at Canada Packers, in Winnipeg, and on road building crews. At the start of WWII when Bert enlisted & went overseas, Clare stayed on the farm to help Dad, and this was the beginning of his life long love of farming. Clare was self-taught and he was able to teach himself many skills. He could do carpentry work, weld or fix farm machinery for himself, his family and neighbors. A couple of years he went south and did some custom combining for Glen Craft in Oklahoma. He also helped both Glen & Howard Turnbull with their carpentry work in the local area. Clare loved harvest and drove his own combine, then for Barry & George, and then in recent years would still go and help out Donald Grobb. Clare enjoyed spending time with Kay's grandchildren as they would be here through their summer holidays. They were always following Clare, interested in whatever he was doing, whether in the field all day or working around the yard. Clare had lots of patience and enjoyed helping the younger ones learn to water ski, to drive a car, play golf and even use the bow & arrow. He was always interested in their activities and encouraged them along. Clare was an avid curler and many a story could be told about his curling career! He enjoyed many good bonspiels with friends and his brother, Frank. He especially enjoyed curling with his life-long friend, Bruin Lounsbury. In later years, much fun was still had for Clare & Bruin as they travelled & "coached" Wayne McConnell & Glen Matchett rinks. Clare enjoyed fishing in the summers and deer hunting in the fall. Many friends & family were part of annual fishing up to northern Manitoba. Clare was someone you could always count on for advice and to lend a helping hand. Funeral services will be held on Thursday April 10, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Treherne United Church. Sandra Rex officiating. Interment to follow in the Bethel Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Clarence's memory to the Tiger Hills Community Foundation, Box 342 Treherne, MB R0G 2V0 or to a charity of one's choice.
