With many tears and many memories of laughter we announce the passing of Auntie Do, at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Tuesday August 11, 2020 at the age of 99 years.
Doris Mary Strang was born at Greenway MB on May 28, 1921, the 2nd daughter of Harry & Jenny Strang.
Doris took her schooling in Greenway then at Baldur High School. When finishing her grade 12, Doris was asked by her principal if she would be interested in becoming a teacher, as the department was looking for teachers to taking their training.
Doris boarded in Marchand MB and taught for a year on a teachers permit. She only got to come home at Christmas & Easter. While on her permit, she had to save money to take her teaching training.
While taking her training, Doris became engaged to Jack Stone. When asked about their courtship, she replied, "It was Wonderful!" They were married on June 26, 1943 in Winnipeg. For their wedding night they stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel for $5.00. Jack & Doris returned to the Fort Garry for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. (It may have cost them more than $5.00!?!?)
Jack & Doris moved to the family farm, where they entertained many family gatherings, including Christmas sleigh rides, summer get-aways for the nieces & nephews, baking, sewing, poetry and many other memories.
Doris re-entered the teaching profession in 1958 in Greenway, then Baldur until 1975.
Doris & Jack moved to the "Hill" in Baldur in 1978. Again, Christmas, family events and now visits from great nieces and nephews!
(Still, when driving through Baldur, we all take a grander at the house on the hill!)
Doris took treatments & beat cancer in 1991 before moving to Lions Manor in Brandon in 1994. In 2001, Doris celebrated her 80th birthday and Jack his 85th. Jack passed away in 2002, and Doris continued to live in Lions Manor until she moved to the Wawanesa PCH after a heart issue in 2018.
Doris enjoyed the continued relationship she found in the PCH and all the Baldur connections. Auntie Do kept on top of all her nieces/nephews lives as well as her great, great great, & great great great nieces & nephews; even to the very end, she asked about them & wanted to hear stories about them all.
Doris was predeceased by her parents Harry & Jenny Strang, husband Jack, sister Anne & husbands Ted Fisher & Lloyd Sigmar, her nephews Garth Lockerby, Jimmy Holmes & Laura, nephew-in-law Wayne Goodhew, sisters-in-law Ruth (Johnny) Hopcraft and Bessy (Sid) Homes.
She is survived by her sister Marguerite Lockerby, nieces Barbara (Don) Withers, Lois Goodhew, Joyce (Del) McDougall, niece-in-law Sandra Lockerby,
Sibil (Frank) Ciserelli, Margaret (Al) Parent, Margie (Jack) Pilchar and nephew Gord (Jan) Fisher.
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, A Private Family Graveside Service will be held on Saturday August 15, 2020 at the Baldur Cemetery with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Nobody enjoyed a funeral reception better than Doris for opportunities to visit & see friends & relatives again. However due to restrictions surrounding Covid-19, we regret that a gathering will not be held.
Memorial donations can be made in Doris' memory to the Baldur & Area Foundation, Box 128, Baldur MB R0K 0B0 or to the Wawanesa PCH Activities, Box 309, Wawanesa MB R0K 2G0.
