Obituary

Douglas Lovell Pontifex passed away peacefully in Calgary AB on Monday November 2, 2015 at the age of 90 with his loving daughters Darlene and Valerie by his side. Douglas was born May 25, 1925 in Cypress River, Manitoba. Doug met and married his loving wife Helen Pontifex nee: Jones in the nearby town of Treherne, Manitoba. Together they enjoyed 45 years of marriage and were blessed with three children Murray, Darlene, and Valerie. In 1974 Douglas and his family moved to Calgary for his work where Doug continued his career in the oil and gas industry. Douglas was very proud of his work as an auditor for BA (British American Oils) which later became Gulf Oil. It was here he met a young trainee by the name of Gordon who soon became a cherished friend and extended family member to Doug and his family. He worked for Gulf for 30 plus years before he retired. Douglas and his family spent many happy years camping, fishing, swimming, and picnicking together. During the summer months Douglas and his family were sure to enjoy many years of wilderness camping where he met and happily referred to lifelong friends he called "camping buddies". He had a tremendous love for the outdoors which he shared with his children. He dazzled many onlookers with his mighty over the head axe swing chopping wood for the evening fires. In addition he loved games, especially cards. Doug shared many fun loving game nights of bridge, 500, and crib with both his family and many friends. In his retirement years together Douglas and his wife, travelled south to the USA, with trailer in tow. They met and made many new and cherished friendships during their five years of travel. Douglas reminisced often with his family about his friends, especially Tom & Norma. In the later years after the passing of his loving wife Helen, he settled in his home in Calgary and continued on building many more happy memories with his children, family, and beloved best friend "Ozzy" his dog. Douglas cherished his family time with his daughters and other family members and special lifelong friends. Especially the special times he shared with his sister Doris, his brother Carl, his nephew Clarence whom always called him Uncle, Great Nephew Dana and family friend June. Douglas was predeceased by his loving wife Helen, son Murray and brother Carl.
