Gertie De Backer of Treherne, MB, formerly of St. Alphonse, MB passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at the Tiger Hills Manor in Treherne, MB at the age of 94 years. Left to mourn Gertie's passing are daughters Madeline (Raymond) Van de Spiegle of Holland, MB, Lorraine (Robert) Grift and Germaine (Ron) Van De Kerckhove, and son Albert (Annette) De Backer of Swan Lake, MB, grandchildren Leonard (Rachel), Laurie (Lynne), Marianne (Gilles), Ken (Chris), Jim, Fred (Corinne), Debbie (Chris), Doug (Shelley), Dan (Sharon), Lorena, Joni, Sherri (Derek), Tannys, Patti (Gerald), Kristi (Trevor), Dawn (Jeff), Glen (Lisa), Wes (Barb), Kirby (Sarah) and Carrie (Chris), as well as 48 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Also left to mourn Gertie's passing are sisters-in-law Laura Grift and Clara De Backer, as well as numerous nieces & nephews. Gertie was predeceased by her husband Fred De Backer, son Maurice and daughter Marlene, sisters Corrie (John), Mary (Gerry), Greta (Henry) and Katherine (Jerome), brothers Jack (Rosella), Gerald and Dave and parents Evert & Johanna (nee Egbers) Grift. Prayers will be held at Jamieson's Holland Chapel, Holland, MB at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from the St. Alphonse Catholic Church, St. Alphonse, MB at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2014. Father Chris Nwosu celebrant. Interment to follow in the St. Alphonse Parish Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Gertie's memory to the CNIB, 1080 Portage Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3.
