Shirley Ann Dubyts (nee Goodbrand)
Sept. 26, 1932 to Nov. 10, 2020
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Dubyts, our beloved wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma.
Mom was born in Belmont, MB to Campbell and Ella Goodbrand. Growing up she was determined to keep up with her three brothers (Harvey, Jim and Allan) which nurtured family values, grit and resilience giving her the perfect combination of strength and a soft heart.
After high school Mom completed Normal School in Winnipeg, then returned to Belmont to marry Harry, the love of her life. On Aug. 2, 1952 they started their 68-year adventure together which included four children Caroline, Noreen, Allan and Barb. Mom taught at Alma School and Mount Hope School for a few years before partnering with Harry as a full-time farmer. Their hard work paid off and they were rewarded with a prosperous farming business. They enjoyed the fruits of their labor, including thirty plus years of winters in Phoenix with many good friends and happy hours.
If we could pick only one word to describe Mom, it would be "selfless". She always put others first. She lived her whole life for her family and, even in dying, she hung on trying to delay our grief. If there was an underdog, she was cheering them on.
Mom's famous quote in sending us to bed, young or old, was "Get to sleep, it's a big day tomorrow". Although we teased her about it, we realize it was a great gift she was giving us - that every day, even the most ordinary, can be looked at with great anticipation and expectation.
Music was always part of Mom's life whether she was simply listening to music, playing the piano with Dad on violin, playing for Sunday service at the Belmont United Church or taking up violin lessons in retirement. She was always tapping her foot and humming a cheerful tune.
Mom had great taste in clothing and an artistic flair which she expressed through her music and art. Painting was a particular source of enjoyment for a period of her life. The treasures she created allow us to keep a little piece of her in our homes.
Mom was the heart and soul of our family and will be greatly missed. Mom, we love you, and you will be forever in our hearts.
Mom is survived by her loving husband Harry, children Caroline (Harry) Bowler, Noreen Kary, Allan (Christine) Dubyts, Barb Dubyts (Ted Reeve), grandchildren Mitch (Christine), Chris, Brendan, Morgan and Alex, great grandchildren, Anna and Jack.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents and siblings.
"If roses grow in heaven Lord, pick a bunch for us
Place them in our mother's arms and tell her they're from us
Tell her we love her and when she turns to smile
Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while."
