Obituary

Sadly, the family announces the peaceful passing of John Brewster at St. Boniface Hospital. John was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Mary Brewster, brothers-in-law Clare Swanson and Barry Moolchan. John is survived by his wife Linda, of 48 years; children Sean (Caroline), Pamela (Butch), David (Monique); grandchildren Wyatt and Evan Brewster, Samantha, Ashley, Katrina, Nicole Tweedy, Jennifer, Danielle and Tori Duncan; three sisters, Elizabeth (Bill) Derksen, Irene (Richard) Schellenberg, Heather Swanson, and brother Lloyd (Dianne) Brewster as well as sister-in-law Sharon Moolchan (Rutherford), brother-in-law Larry (Wendy) Rutherford, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born in Treherne, MB August 1, 1942, living there until he was 13 years old, when he became an adult, and went to Calgary to work on a ranch. Over the years he worked at many jobs - all hard work. Some were in Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. These varied from building hydro line towers, running a sign company, operating his own garages, long distance trucking from Montreal to Vancouver and finally for City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Department until 1999. In his younger years he excelled at hockey - in 1962 he made the Flin Flin Bomber hockey team. On the return from Flin Flon, he played for several teams in Southwest Manitoba. When his son began playing hockey he turned to coaching and later drove Sean many miles to watch him play. John coached Pam in her ringette, he always enjoyed watching anyone he had coached as they matured. He followed both children as they played baseball - his lawn chair and umbrella at the sidelines. His last joy was in 2013 watching Sean and Pam play in their baseball finals. John often said he had a full life in which he got to do all the things he wanted. His one regret was not going to his NHL tryout with Minnesota. John's love and joy were his children and grandchildren - his eyes lit up when they came over and he enjoyed watching their games. Even in later years he had suggestions to offer. The family would like to thank St. Boniface Hospital 7A West staff and Dr. Yaffe for the excellent care John received over the last three months, Dr. Husarewycz for his care over the years, and to the home care staff that came to his home. Friends and family are invited to come together for a graveside service at Brookdale Cemetery, Holland, MB on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, 351 Tache Ave. Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6, or the Manitoba Multiple Sclerosis Society, Suite 100-1465 Buffalo Place Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8.
