Obituary

It is with extreme sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Dale "Sally" William Hunter at his residence on the morning of Monday April 20th, 2020. Dale was born in Brandon, MB on August 25th, 1959. He grew up on the farm near Nesbitt, MB along with his younger sister Lana, later farming with his father and uncle. He attended school in Nesbitt, Wawanesa, and later Crocus Plains high school in Brandon to pursue hockey opportunities. He was an avid hockey and baseball fanatic. Throughout his hockey career, he played junior hockey in Swan River, senior hockey for the Wawanesa Jets, and for the Souris Elks. Baseball was a huge part of his life growing up, following his Dad's ball games and playing when he was old enough to join the team. Dale went to Mayville, North Dakota to pursue a baseball scholarship but chose to return home in 1981. He was known as one of the best baseball players in Western Manitoba for over 20 years. During his baseball career, he played 21 seasons for the Riverside Canucks of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League, and later for the Birtle Blue Jays. As quoted in the Winnipeg Sun, he won two battling titles (once hitting .515 for the season) and was the MSBL's home run king and RBI leader eight times. His teams won six league championships. In 2008, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. After retiring as an active player, Dale enjoyed umpiring at local baseball games. Dale married Cheryl Sampson in 1981 and they divorced in 1990. His eldest daughter Tasha was born in 1983 and youngest daughter Teagan was born in 1988. He was a huge supporter of the girls in their sports. Tasha with her curling and Teagan with her baseball and volleyball, rarely missing a game. Tasha was married in 2011 to Derek and they have two children, Denver and Mabel. They reside in Vancouver, BC. Teagan and Craig became parents just a few months ago to Gracie. They reside in Grande Prairie, AB. Although his girls and grandchildren lived far away, they always held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed FaceTime calls as a way to stay connected. Dale held various jobs throughout the years, farming in Nesbitt until the early 90's then going on to work in Northern Manitoba. He tried his hand at different employment opportunities including the oil industry and MTS, but he was always drawn to home and his passion involved working on the farm. In 2004, he met Kim Dalman at a New Years Eve event in Ninette, MB. In 2007, they were married and lived on a farm near Belmont, MB along with her daughter Kirby. He then purchased some cows and took pride in his small herd of cattle. He loved spending time with them, often taking pictures and videos of the baby calves. In 2011, our grandson Korbyn came into our lives with open arms. Dale was so proud to raise this little man as his own. Sometimes, it is quite evident in Korbyn's character that Dale is the father figure. Dale's past leisure interests included farming, hockey, baseball, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and spending time at the cabin with his friends. He also valued spending time with his cousins. More recently, Dale had been following surrounding community baseball and hockey games, pontooning on the lake in front of their home in the summers, camping, and also enjoyed shooting gophers on the farm. Dale had a huge heart and was such a kind person. His sense of humor and personality left a mark wherever he went. He had an exceptional ability to remember names. Anyone crossing Dale's path, young or old, he would remember their name. He loved to live life around family, friends, and farming. Equally important, he valued relationships formed and maintained over the years. He chose to live life to the fullest and made sure his health never held him back and never complained.
