Cécile Antoinette Raine (nee Boulet), formerly of Somerset, MB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the Action Marguerite (Foyer Valade) Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, MB, at the age of 91 years.

While it is somewhat unfair to the subject to try to compress all of her life into just a few lines of print, it is fair to point out that what really matters is how you felt in her company and how you ache in her passing.

For those who knew her, Cecile was fun, energetic, generous, and devoted as a friend, as a wife and a Mom.  Her favorite role was always anything that involved children and Mom really identified with her role as Mémère, and Great Grand-Mémère.

Born in Dunrea, MB to Thomas and Julie (Daigle) November 25, 1929 she became part of a large family of 5 boys and 5 girls.  Times were often hard but there was time for baseball which they really enjoyed.  Mom had a terrific left hand! She was later “encouraged” by the nuns to learn to write with the right hand which was to create life-long difficulties when trying to follow knitting patterns of which she mastered a great many.

Mom worked briefly for Eaton’s in Winnipeg before marrying Wilfrid Raine from Boissevain who was working for Birks Jewelry.  When they relocated to Somerset MB Mom became a great community member as a 4H leader where she demonstrated a real talent for sewing.  She truly enjoyed sharing her skills and passions in this area. She was a member of the Parish Council, member of the church choir, an active member of The Daughters of Isabella, a helper with the annual Music Festivals, and enjoyed curling and knitting those ever popular heavy curling sweaters!

Mom loved baseball and enjoyed the Bombers.  She watched football matches on TV but had no clue as to the rules. It didn’t matter!

For a number of years Mom worked as a Postal clerk in Somerset and delighted interacting with the community in that capacity too. She loved theatre and attended Rainbow Stage at every opportunity.  Each one included a picnic in the Kildonan Park and a glowing review of the performance on the long way home afterwards.

Mom’s active lifestyle, (a huge fan of Richard Simmons), walking miles each day and logging miles on her stationery bike, added years to her life. Camping in a cramped 8 foot Boler eventually evolved to camping in a 35 foot RV and Mom delighted in this new world of travel and encounters.

Above all else, it was in traditions and the family gatherings that demonstrated her unconditional love, embracing all who sought inclusion. Mom genuinely enjoyed company, the laughter, the kids milling around and the games of “Cinq Cent”.  Now left hand or right hand didn’t matter, you played the hand you were dealt and made the best of it. Perhaps that is exactly how she saw life too and what a game she played!

Mémère’s hand always held hearts.

Cécile leaves to mourn her children Henriette (Romeo) Lemieux of Winnipeg, MB, Tom (Leslie) Raine of Winnipeg, MB, Richard (Ethel) Raine of Somerset, MB and Annette (Lewis) Harvey of Winnipeg, MB, extended family Steve & Lisa LeBlanc of Calgary, AB, 11 grandchildren Richelle (Chris), Dalain (Tess), Dania (Keith), Angela (Adrian), Melissa (Mike), Amanda (Leo), Curtis, Stephanie (Ryan), Jessica (Jeff), Joel (Stephanie), Nicole (Mansour); 18 great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Matthew, Gavin, Mallory, Brittany, Adrianna, Deliah, Everson, Ferafina, Gabrielle, Audrey, London, Lincoln, Logan, Liam, Zoe, James & Cameron.

She is also survived by a sister Lorraine Riddell of Carmen, MB, sisters-in-law Lois Holditch of Boissevain, MB and Hazel Raine of Moose Jaw, SK, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.  Cécile was predeceased by her husband Wilfrid in 2011, parents Thomas & Julie Boulet as well as several siblings.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday October 2, 2021 at 1:00 pm in the Notre Dame de La Nativite Catholic Church with Father Paulin Akpapupu as Celebrant.  Eulogy will be prior to Mass at 12:45 pm.  Interment to follow in the Somerset Catholic Parish Cemetery.
