Victor Brown Obituary

Vic Brown passed away peacefully at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Friday, March 31, 2023. He was 87 years old.

Vic grew up in Ninette, Manitoba and was the oldest of five children. He developed a love for sports at an early age which he carried with him into his career as the recreation director for the City of Brandon until he retired at age 62 for health reasons. During his time with the City, he was involved in many recreation and sports milestones, including hosting events such as the 1982 Labatt Brier, the 1994 Scott Tournament of Hearts and the 1991 and 1994 World Youth Baseball Championships. Vic, along with Paul Hudey and Lou Vermette were the originators of the Knights of Columbus hockey Tournament of Champions which has operated for more then 50 years. What he was most proud of, however, was successfully bidding on and hosting the 1979 Canada Winter Games and the 1997 Canada Summer Games - making Brandon only the second city in Canada to host both a Summer and Winter Canada Games. Vic served as the general manager for both events.

Vic married Mae Riter from Darlingford. While still living in Ninette they had three children, Rick, Randy and Susan. The move to Brandon came while the kids were very young but Ninette and nearby Pelican Lake would remain “home” for his whole life. After retiring, he purchased a year-round cottage at Pelican Point and spent as much time as he could there.

Vic is predeceased by his parents Marjorie and Charlie Brown, his brother Jim and his oldest son Rick. He leaves to mourn his daughter in law, Jeanne Brown (Rick) and grandchildren Anthony Brown (Brandi) and great-grandchildren Savanna and Sophie, Collin Brown (Tanis), Thomas Brown (Branyn) and great-grandchildren Braylee, Turner and Hadley; son Randy (Elaine), grandchildren Curtis Brown (Colleen Hrabi) and great-grandchildren Arlo and Thea, Sarah Hiebert (Rene) and great-grandchildren Lily and Charlie; daughter Susan Dorge (Maurice), granddaughter Alexis Dorge (Patrick Alix) and great-granddaughter Scarlet.

Vic also leaves to mourn his sisters Ina Lang and Joyce Robbins and their families, sister-in-law Dianne Brown (Jim) and his brother Jack and their families.

In accordance with Vic’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place in Ninette at a later date.

The family would like to thank the caring and devoted staff at both the Wawanesa Personal Care Home and A3 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon. Thank you for all of your compassionate care as his health declined.
